The nature of our operations and activities means we have a significant responsibility for managing the receiving environment.
Our approach to effective environmental stewardship is based upon minimising environmental impacts to the extent possible, only disturbing land necessary to support mining operations and progressively rehabilitating mined areas.
Metro’s mining operations are managed within Commonwealth and State regulatory frameworks. The Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act), in addition to the State’s Environmental Protection Act 1994, outline the principal legal frameworks for managing the receiving environment.
Environment Policy
Metro’s Environment Policy highlights the company’s intention towards delivering returns through the implementation of sustainable environmental management programs across all aspects of our business. We take caring for country and the environment very seriously, making it a feature of our core business to work closely with many important environmental and cultural heritage stakeholders.
Our Environment Policy is implemented through our various management plans and standard operating procedures, and our day-to-day operations are undertaken in accordance with a range of aspect specific management plans. Adherence to these and our other operational management plans is monitored by the Department of Environment and Science on an annual basis and independently audited at least every three years.
Compliance Reporting
Metro undertakes annual compliance reporting detailing the progress of Metro’s performance against the requirements outlined in its EPBC Act approvals EPBC 2014/7305 and EPBC 2015/7538.
